Safety Vest Care and Maintenance: How to Extend the Life of Your Hi-Vis PPE

Maintaining Your Safety Vests for Maximum Performance

A safety vest only protects when it is in proper working condition. Dirty, faded, or damaged vests can reduce visibility by up to 50%, effectively downgrading a Class 3 vest to Class 1 performance. In the UAE, where dust, sand, UV exposure, and extreme heat accelerate wear, proper maintenance is essential.

Washing Guidelines

Machine wash hi-vis vests in warm water (40°C maximum) using a mild detergent. Never use chlorine bleach — it degrades fluorescent dyes and weakens reflective tape adhesive. Avoid fabric softeners, which can coat reflective material and reduce its retroreflectivity. Air dry when possible; if using a dryer, use low heat only. FR-rated vests have specific laundering requirements — always follow the manufacturer’s care label.

Inspection Schedule

Implement a regular inspection programme: check vests before each shift for torn fabric, peeling reflective tape, damaged closures, and overall cleanliness. Reflective tape that is cracked, bubbled, or no longer reflects light when tested with a torch must be replaced. Fluorescent fabric that has faded to a dull shade no longer meets the minimum luminance requirements of ANSI 107 or EN ISO 20471.

Replacement Criteria

Replace safety vests when: the fluorescent background has visibly faded, more than 25% of reflective tape is damaged or missing, the garment has holes, tears, or significant contamination (oil, paint, chemicals), or closures no longer secure the vest properly. In the UAE’s harsh environment, expect a service life of 6 to 12 months for daily-use vests.
