Combating Heat Stress with Cooling Safety Vests
Heat stress is the single largest occupational health risk in the UAE, with summer temperatures routinely exceeding 50°C. The UAE Ministry of Human Resources enforces a midday work ban from 15 June to 15 September (12:30 PM to 3:00 PM), but heat-related risks persist throughout the working day. Standard safety vests can trap body heat and accelerate dehydration. Cooling safety vests address this critical gap.
Types of Cooling Vests
Evaporative cooling vests are soaked in water and use the evaporation process to draw heat away from the body. They are lightweight, affordable, and provide 4 to 10 hours of cooling per soak cycle. They work best in the UAE’s dry desert climate where evaporation rates are high.
Phase-change cooling vests use specially formulated ice packs that maintain a consistent temperature (typically 15°C) for 2 to 4 hours. They are more expensive but provide reliable, temperature-controlled cooling regardless of humidity levels — useful during the UAE’s humid coastal months.
Active cooling vests use battery-powered fans or liquid circulation systems. These offer the most powerful cooling effect but are heavier and more expensive. They are typically used in extremely high-heat environments such as steel foundries or confined spaces.
Integrating Cooling with Hi-Vis Requirements
The best approach is to wear a cooling vest as a base layer underneath a standard hi-vis safety vest. Some manufacturers produce integrated cooling hi-vis vests that combine both functions in a single garment. Ensure that any integrated solution still meets the minimum ANSI or EN ISO visibility requirements.
