Understanding Safety Vest Classifications in the UAE
Safety vests are classified into three primary classes based on visibility level, as defined by ANSI/ISEA 107 and EN ISO 20471 standards. Choosing the correct class directly impacts worker safety on UAE construction sites, highways, and industrial facilities.
Class 1 Safety Vests: Low-Risk Environments
Class 1 vests provide the minimum amount of hi-vis material and reflective tape. They are designed for workers in environments where traffic does not exceed 25 mph and where there is adequate separation between workers and vehicles. Common uses include warehouse workers, parking attendants, and delivery personnel in controlled areas. These vests feature at least 217 square inches of background material and 155 square inches of reflective tape.
Class 2 Safety Vests: Moderate-Risk Environments
Class 2 vests are the most widely used across UAE industries. Required wherever traffic speeds range from 25 to 50 mph or where workers operate near moving equipment — including most construction sites, utility workers, survey crews, and airport ground operations. A Class 2 vest must have at least 775 square inches of background material and 201 square inches of reflective tape, ensuring visibility from a greater distance and in low-light conditions.
Class 3 Safety Vests: High-Risk Environments
Class 3 provides the highest visibility and is mandatory for workers exposed to traffic speeds exceeding 50 mph or operating in high-risk zones. These vests offer full-torso coverage with reflective tape on the front, back, and sleeves. Highway construction crews, emergency responders, and flaggers in the UAE must wear Class 3 garments. Many UAE contractors on major road projects mandate Class 3 for all personnel.
How to Choose the Right Class
Selection should be based on a thorough risk assessment of the work environment. Consider traffic speed, time of day, proximity to moving machinery, and ambient lighting.
