Respiratory Protection: A Critical PPE Category in the UAE
UAE workers face respiratory hazards ranging from construction dust and sandstorms to chemical vapours in industrial facilities and hydrogen sulphide in oil and gas operations. Selecting the correct respiratory protective equipment (RPE) requires matching the device to the specific airborne hazard, its concentration, and the duration of exposure.
Disposable Filtering Facepiece Respirators
FFP1 masks filter at least 80% of airborne particles and are suitable for nuisance dust. FFP2 (equivalent to N95) masks filter at least 94% and are appropriate for construction dust, sanding, and similar operations. FFP3 (equivalent to N99) masks filter at least 99% and are required for fine toxic dusts, mould, and biological agents. For UAE construction sites, FFP2 is the minimum recommended standard.
Reusable Half-Face and Full-Face Respirators
Half-face respirators with replaceable cartridges offer better fit, comfort, and long-term economy compared to disposable masks. Cartridges are available for particulates, organic vapours, acid gases, and combination hazards. Full-face respirators add eye and face protection and are used where chemical splash or high-concentration vapours are present.
Supplied Air and SCBA
For oxygen-deficient or IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) atmospheres — such as confined spaces, tanks, and certain oil and gas operations — supplied-air respirators or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) are required. These must be maintained, inspected, and used by trained personnel only.
