Proper PPE Storage Protects Your Investment and Your Workers

PPE that is improperly stored degrades faster, becomes contaminated, and may not perform when needed. On UAE construction sites, where extreme heat, UV radiation, sand, and humidity attack materials from every angle, proper storage is essential to maintaining PPE effectiveness and extending service life.

General Storage Principles

Store PPE in cool, dry, shaded locations away from direct sunlight. UV radiation is the number one environmental threat to PPE in the UAE — it degrades hard hat shells, yellows safety glasses, weakens harness webbing, and fades hi-vis fabric. Dedicated PPE storage containers or cabinets should be positioned near work areas so workers can easily access and return their equipment.

Category-Specific Storage

Hard hats: Store upside down or on hat racks, never on the ground or in direct sun. Do not store in vehicle windows or dashboards where temperatures can exceed 80°C.

Safety glasses: Store in microfibre pouches or dedicated cases to prevent lens scratching. Keep separate from abrasive tools and materials.

Respirators: Store in sealed bags or containers to prevent filter contamination. Reusable respirators should be cleaned after each use before storage.

Fall harnesses: Hang on dedicated hooks or racks — never fold or pile. Inspect webbing for damage before storage and keep away from chemicals, sharp edges, and heat sources.

Chemical gloves: Store away from chemicals and direct sun. Turn inside out periodically to air out and check for pinholes.

PPE Inventory Management

Maintain a PPE inventory register tracking: quantities on hand, sizes available, issue dates, replacement schedule, and reorder points. Assign responsibility for PPE inventory to a specific person — typically the site safety officer or storesman.
