Protecting Workers from Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and irreversible. In UAE construction, manufacturing, aviation, and oil and gas environments, workers are routinely exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A) — the threshold at which hearing protection becomes mandatory under OSHAD regulations. Properly selected and fitted hearing protection can prevent this entirely preventable condition.
Ear Plugs
Disposable foam ear plugs are the most common and economical option. When properly inserted (rolled, inserted, and allowed to expand), they can achieve NRR ratings of 29 to 33 dB. Reusable ear plugs made from silicone or elastomer offer consistent fit and can be washed and reused. Custom-moulded ear plugs provide the best fit and comfort for workers who wear hearing protection daily.
Ear Muffs
Over-the-ear muffs are easier to fit correctly and are ideal for intermittent noise exposure where hearing protection needs to be donned and removed frequently. Helmet-mounted ear muffs integrate with hard hats for construction and industrial use. Electronic ear muffs amplify speech and ambient sounds while automatically attenuating harmful noise levels — useful for supervisors and equipment operators who need communication capability.
Choosing the Right NRR
The Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) indicates the maximum noise reduction under ideal laboratory conditions. Real-world performance is typically 50-75% of the stated NRR. To estimate actual protection, subtract 7 from the NRR, then divide by 2 — this gives the approximate real-world reduction in dB. For a 90 dB environment, hearing protection with an NRR of at least 25 is recommended.
